A Life Full of Light
Juliana “Juli” Sund (March 1, 1983 – February 15, 1999) was a bright, spirited 15-year-old whose infectious laughter and adventurous heart touched everyone around her. Tragically taken during a Yosemite vacation with her mother, Carole Sund, and friend Silvina Pelosso, Juli’s life was far more than the crime that ended it. This Dark Dialogue tribute celebrates her vibrant spirit and lasting impact, keeping her memory alive with respect and care.
A Life Full of Light
Born in Eureka, California, Juli grew up in a close-knit family, the youngest of Carole and Jens Sund’s four children. Known for her cheerleading prowess, she shone at a Stockton competition just days before her final trip, exuding energy and charm. Her nickname, “Juli,” reflected her sunny personality—always ready with a smile or a witty remark. She adored her family, especially her mother, with whom she shared a deep bond, and welcomed Silvina, a 16-year-old Argentine exchange student, into their home like a sister. Juli’s love for adventure led her to embrace experiences like trips to Disneyland and San Francisco, making every moment with Silvina unforgettable.
At school, Juli was a dedicated student and a cheerleader who brought people together. Her family described her as a planner like her mother, yet with a playful streak that made her the heart of any gathering. Whether cheering at games or exploring new places, Juli lived with a zest that left a mark on her Eureka community.
The Yosemite Tragedy
On February 12, 1999, Juli, her mother Carole, and Silvina embarked on a Yosemite getaway, a place Juli loved visiting. After a stop in Stockton for Juli’s cheerleading event, they checked into Cedar Lodge in El Portal on February 14. On February 15, they dined at the lodge’s restaurant, unaware that Cary Stayner, a handyman there, would target them that night. Posing as a maintenance worker, Stayner entered their room, bound the trio, and later killed Carole and Silvina in El Portal, then Juli near Lake Don Pedro. Her body was found on March 25, 1999, after Stayner sent a taunting map to authorities. He was convicted in 2002 and remains on death row, though California’s execution moratorium persists.
The search for Juli gripped the nation, with her father, Jens, and grandparents, Francis and Carole Carrington, offering a $300,000 reward. Her loss, alongside her mother’s and Silvina’s, devastated their community, but Juli’s memory endures through stories of her vibrancy.
A Lasting Legacy
Juli’s death spurred her family to create the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, launched in April 1999 with a $200,000 donation. The foundation has since awarded over $1.1 million to help families of missing or murdered loved ones, embodying Juli’s spirit of connection and care. At their joint memorial in Eureka on April 11, 1999, Juli was remembered as inseparable from her mother, their shared tombstone at Saint Bernard’s Cemetery a testament to their bond. Her sister Gina’s poem spoke of a “void that cannot be filled,” capturing Juli’s irreplaceable presence.
Juli’s legacy lives on through the foundation’s work and the memories shared by those who knew her. Her love for cheerleading, family, and adventure continues to inspire, reminding us to cherish life’s joyful moments.
