A Life of Adventure and Connection

Silvina Pelosso (November 12, 1982 – February 15, 1999) was a bright, adventurous 16-year-old from Córdoba, Argentina, whose life was tragically cut short during a dream trip to Yosemite National Park. An exchange student embraced as family by Carole and Juli Sund, Silvina’s warmth and curiosity left a lasting impact. This Dark Dialogue tribute celebrates her vibrant spirit, honoring her life beyond the crime that took her.

A Life of Adventure and Connection

Silvina grew up in Córdoba, Argentina, with a zest for learning and exploring. In 1998, she traveled to Eureka, California, as an exchange student, living with the Sund family for three months. Hosted by Carole and Jens Sund, she formed a close bond with their daughter Juli, becoming like a sister. Silvina’s infectious enthusiasm shone through in trips to Disneyland, San Francisco, and Yosemite, experiences carefully planned by Carole to make her U.S. visit unforgettable. Known for her kindness and curiosity, Silvina bridged cultures, leaving a mark on her temporary California home.

At home in Argentina, Silvina was a beloved daughter and friend, eager to share stories of her travels. Her decision to join the Sunds for a Yosemite trip in February 1999 reflected her love for new experiences. She brought joy to those around her, from classmates in Córdoba to the Eureka community who welcomed her.

The Yosemite Tragedy

On February 12, 1999, Silvina, Carole, and Juli set out for Yosemite, staying at Cedar Lodge in El Portal on February 14. After dining at the lodge’s restaurant on February 15, they were targeted by Cary Stayner, a handyman who gained entry to their room under false pretenses. He bound them with duct tape, killed Carole and Silvina in El Portal, and later murdered Juli near Lake Don Pedro. Silvina’s body, alongside Carole’s, was found on March 19 in their burned-out rental car. Stayner’s confession came after his arrest for a fourth murder in July 1999; he was convicted in 2002 and remains on death row, though California’s execution moratorium persists.

The search for Silvina gripped both the U.S. and Argentina, with her family and the Sunds offering a $300,000 reward. Her loss devastated two communities, united in grief across continents.

A Legacy of Love

Silvina’s death, alongside Carole and Juli’s, inspired the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, established in April 1999. The foundation has provided over $1.1 million to aid families of missing or murdered loved ones, reflecting Silvina’s spirit of connection. Her memory lives on in Córdoba and Eureka, where she is remembered as a joyful teen who brought people together. At the Sunds’ memorial on April 11, 1999, Silvina was honored alongside Carole and Juli, their shared tragedy cementing a bond of remembrance.
